Did You Know? Understanding PIP, BI, and UIM Can Protect Your Rights
Most people believe their car insurance will take care of everything after an accident. But the truth is, not all parts of your policy work the same way and many clients are shocked to find out what isn’t covered until it’s too late.
At Barreto Law Firm, we want our clients to feel informed and protected. Whether you’ve been in a recent crash or just want to help a loved one avoid mistakes, understanding the difference between PIP, BI, and UIM can make all the difference.
What Do These Terms Really Mean
✔️ PIP (Personal Injury Protection) pays for your medical bills, no matter who caused the crash
✔️ BI (Bodily Injury Liability) pays for the other person’s injuries if you’re at fault
✔️ UIM (Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage) steps in if the driver who hit you has little or no insurance
✔️ These coverages often apply together but only if claimed correctly
✔️ Early legal advice can help you avoid denied claims and costly delays
Even one small mistake after a crash can affect your entire claim. That’s why we help our clients understand every step and every clause

What Happens After a Crash Depends on Your Coverage
PIP (Personal Injury Protection)
This is the first coverage used in New Jersey's no-fault system. It pays for your medical treatment lost wages and some household expenses. But every policy is different and once your PIP limit is reached you may need to look elsewhere for coverage.
BI (Bodily Injury Liability)
This pays for someone else’s medical expenses pain and suffering and damages when you're found at fault. But if you are the one injured and the other driver is responsible their BI coverage should pay for your damages if they carry enough insurance.
UIM (Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage)
If the person who hit you has no insurance or too little to cover your losses your UIM coverage can help fill in the gap. But you have to file a separate claim and many clients don’t even realize this option exists until we point it out.
Let Us Review Your Policy With You
If you're not sure what your policy includes you’re not alone. Many past clients believed they had full coverage only to learn they were missing key protections. We’re happy to take a look and explain what’s actually included so you're prepared if something happens.
